Technology with a Human Touch: Mini Pi Brings a Heartwarming Children’s Day to Young Patients

Children’s Day is a celebration of laughter, companionship, and the heartfelt wish that every child grows up surrounded by love and care. While joy fills schoolyards and playgrounds, there is another group of children spending their days in hospital wards, quietly holding their longing for the outside world between the steady drips of IV lines.

On May 27, ahead of International Children’s Day, Gaoqing Dynamics joined hands with the Beijing Chunmiao Charity Foundation, a nationally recognized 5A public fundraising foundation, to bring their humanoid robot Xiaopai into a pediatric surgery ward. There, a unique encounter between warm technology and genuine companionship unfolded—a healing moment where human children and a robot “child” spent time together and shared an unforgettable Children’s Day gift.

White hospital rooms, the rhythmic beeping of medical equipment, and ongoing treatments are part of daily life for hospitalized children. They are brave little warriors battling illness, yet like all children, they long for companionship, delight in laughter, and are curious about new experiences.

On this special day, a charming and lovable “mystery guest” quietly entered the ward. Standing about the height of a two- or three-year-old child, Xiaopai could interact with children at eye level. Its round head and expressive movements made it instantly approachable. The moment Xiaopai appeared, the atmosphere in the ward began to brighten.

Its lively performance quickly drew children from around the room. Some eagerly started chatting with Xiaopai, while others excitedly said, “I like playing with robots!” Children gathered around, posed for photos, and laughed together. The ward, once filled only with the sounds of medical devices, suddenly felt festive and full of surprise.

One child who had recently been transferred out of the intensive care unit was lying quietly in bed, feeling discouraged. Xiaopai approached his bedside, performed a dance, and offered words of encouragement. Slowly, the child raised his hand and began mimicking the robot’s movements. Later, his mother told the team that his mood had improved dramatically and that he seemed much happier than he had been after surgery.

With the support of medical staff, Xiaopai also delivered holiday greetings to every child confined to bed. Even the healthcare workers found themselves smiling more than usual. The head nurse remarked, “As soon as Xiaopai arrived, even the adults started feeling happier.”

At that moment, we truly felt that a robot can be more than just a machine—it can become a real companion for children.

Technology is often associated with words like “cutting-edge” and “efficient.” When people think of robots, they imagine speed, competition, and pushing the limits of performance.

But Xiaopai showed us another possibility.

Its ability to enter hospital wards and connect with children is about far more than its adorable appearance. Built on Gaoqing Dynamics’ technological expertise, Xiaopai offers stable interaction, precise movement control, and the flexibility to adapt to different environments. Equipped with an AI voice module, it can converse naturally with children and engage them in meaningful interaction. Compact, lightweight, and safe, it can approach children comfortably—even those confined to their beds—and deliver encouragement and companionship up close.

Xiaopai’s natural talent for companionship had already attracted attention. At the 2026 Yizhuang Humanoid Robot Marathon earlier this year, its lovable appearance generated more than one billion online impressions.

The value of technology has never been limited to efficiency alone. A robot can race across a marathon course, but it can also slow down and step into a child’s world.

This hospital visit was a beautiful example of “mutual companionship.” The children received comfort and encouragement, while Xiaopai, the robot “child,” also grew through the experience and deepened its role as a companion.

The smiles illuminated throughout the ward helped us envision the many ways robots can create value:

  • They can provide long-term companionship in pediatric wards and rehabilitation centers, easing anxiety during treatment.
  • They can enter primary and secondary school classrooms as educational partners that inspire curiosity and nurture scientific thinking.
  • They can collaborate with universities and research institutions, helping advance embodied AI and explore new technological frontiers.
  • In the future, they may become part of everyday family life, accompanying both children and adults at home.

For schools, Xiaopai can be an intelligent partner that empowers education. For research organizations, it can serve as an important platform for translating technology into real-world applications. For future users, it may become a comforting presence that eases loneliness and brings warmth into daily life.

This Children’s Day belonged not only to human children, but also to Xiaopai, the robot child. The heartwarming encounter in the hospital marks a new beginning in bringing meaningful companionship to more real-world settings.

Looking ahead, Gaoqing Dynamics will continue refining its core humanoid robotics technologies and steadily advance practical applications in healthcare support, education, scientific research, and family companionship.

Technology can be warm. Companionship knows no boundaries.

May every technological innovation be used with kindness. And may every child grow up healthy, happy, and surrounded by care.
